Wheelchair Cushions

Preventing pressure sores and ulcers while seated in a wheelchair during extended periods will typically require the use of a wheelchair cushion. We have a large variety of options to accommodate various requirements.

Choosing a Wheelchair Cushion

  • Size: You want to be sure to choose the exact size of your wheelchair seat for an appropriate fit. The height of the cushion will also determine how high the person will be sitting in the chair and may affect whether or not they will still be able to fit comfortably at a table or desk.
  • Type of Cushion: Standard cushions may be adequate for many pressure prevention needs; however, there are also specialty type cushions, such as wedge shaped cushions, pommel cushions, anti-thrust cushions, and saddle cushions that can help prevent forward sliding and assist with positioning and posture control.
  • Cushion Material: Foam, Gel, and Air wheelchair cushions are the most common choices. Foam cushions are an economical and lightweight option to distribute weight more evenly over a larger area, helping to avoid pressure on more bony areas. Gel Cushions have advanced pressure prevention characteristics and may also help regulate body temperature and moisture buildup, which may help protect delicate skin. Air cushions are designed for advanced pressure management for those at highest risk of developing pressure ulcers.
