Transport Wheelchairs

If you need something lightweight and folding for easy travel, the transport wheelchairs (also known as transport chairs) are the answer. These are a great alternative to larger, heavier wheelchairs. These lightweight, portable wheelchairs are great for those that may be able to stand for short periods, but require assistance if walking longer distances. They fold up easily to fit in the trunk or back seat and unfold just as easily when ready for use. Most of the transport wheelchairs weigh only 14 lbs. up to about 25 lbs, depending on the model and support standard weight seniors and adults. The Bariatric Transport Chairs can accommodate heavier users weighing up to about to 450 lbs. Unlike the manual wheelchairs with large back tires, these transport chairs do require a caregiver or companion to push the chair from behind.

Choosing a Transport Wheelchair

  • Seat Width: When choosing a transport chair, seat width is one of the most important factors. Measure the width of the user from their outside hip to their other outside hip while they are sitting. You can add 1" to 2" to this measurement to allow for movement or bulky clothing, if applicable. Standard adult users typically use transport chairs from 17" to 19" wide; however, there are heavy duty transport wheelchairs that can accommodate heavier, larger, or bariatric users with larger seat widths at 20" and 22".
  • Overall Width: It's also important to remember to check the overall width of the transport wheelchair to ensure that it will fit through the interior doorways, depending on the layout of the building. Most models include the overall width in the specifications.
  • Armrests: The armrests on transport chairs will be available in Full Length Arms that accommodates those that would benefit from additional arm support and Desk Length Arms that are shorter to allow the chair to be pushed up to a desk or table.
  • Additional Options: There are many other features and options available, depending on the model you choose. Special features include designer upholstery, folding backrests, larger rear wheels, carry bags, and more! We carry all major manufacturer brands including Drive Medical, Invacare, Medline, Carex, and others.
